Product: Awair Element
Overview
This article describes basic connectivity requirements for Awair Element.
Awair Element Device Connectivity
Awair Element requires a constant WiFi connection in order to function. Awair Element uses WiFi to send air quality information to Awair's cloud server and relays data back to your smartphone via the Awair app. When Awair Element is disconnected from WiFi, it will appear grey in the Awair app and the light on the device will begin blinking. Please note, integrations and other preferences will be saved if Awair Element is disconnected from the internet.
Awair Element communicates directly with your smartphone using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Awair Element requires Bluetooth for the initial pairing process during setup, but afterwards can be controlled entirely by WiFi.
Required WiFi Specifications
Awair Element is only compatible with 2.4GHz B/G/N WiFi networks. Awair Element can operate on dual band routers (2.4GHz and 5GHz), but we recommend giving each band a separate SSID before connecting to the 2.4GHz network. We also recommend turning off the load balancing feature for dual routers, as this can occasionally move Awair Element o the 5GHz network causing a disconnection. Your firewall must also allow access to TCP ports 8883 and 443.
To check in the router settings, open your web browser and go to your router’s admin interface. You may need to check your router’s manual to find the exact address to enter into the URL address bar, but here are a few of the more common ones:
-
Apple - 10.0.1.1
-
ASUS - 192.168.1.1
-
Belkin - 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1

Unfortunately, Awair Element is not supported on most mesh networks, Zigbee, or Z-Wave.
